Julie Chrisley Reveals Cruel Prison Prank and Harsh Conditions Before Her Surprise Release
“I was set up and locked inside the cafeteria… on purpose.”
Julie Chrisley is opening up about one of the most disturbing moments she faced during her time in federal prison—an incident that left her shaken and emotionally distressed, long before she and husband Todd Chrisley were unexpectedly released following a presidential pardon.
On the July 8 episode of Unlocked, the podcast hosted by their daughter Savannah Chrisley, Julie, 52, revisited her more than two-year incarceration at the Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Alongside her husband Todd, 56—who served his sentence at Federal Prison Camp Pensacola in Florida—the reality star shared unsettling details of what she described as a targeted and cruel prank orchestrated by a prison staff member.
“He was a food service [worker],” Julie said, recalling the traumatic incident. “Yeah. He’s since retired.”
“He trapped her because he was pissed off at her,” Savannah added. “He did it on purpose.”
Julie described being locked inside a cafeteria, apparently as a malicious act by a correctional officer. “He was just a miserable human being,” she said. Todd echoed her sentiment, stating, “They all are. Every day I got up, it was my sole intent to make their life more miserable because they were there to make ours miserable.”
Women Face Harsher Conditions Behind Bars, Says Chrisley Family
Savannah noted that her mother seemed to experience significantly harsher conditions than Todd during their respective sentences. Among the differences:
-
No air conditioning at Julie’s facility during intense heatwaves
-
A slower appeal process
-
More severe medical issues, including developing asthma during her 28 months behind bars
Todd recalled that after he complained about the heat at his camp, air conditioning units were installed within a week. Julie, however, never had that option.
“We didn’t have that option to even get it repaired because we didn’t have it to begin with,” she explained.
Savannah also previously spoke out about the extreme heat at the Kentucky facility:
“It can be 100 degrees inside the building. She literally said she got physically sick because she got so hot,” she shared on a past podcast episode.
A Life-Changing Call from the Oval Office
In May 2025, both Julie and Todd Chrisley were granted presidential pardons by Donald Trump and released from prison within hours of the announcement. Julie, speaking to ABC News shortly after her release, reflected on the dramatic shift in her life:
“A month ago, I was sitting in prison, dreading a summer with no air conditioning—and now here I am, home.”
The Road Ahead for the Chrisley Family
Despite the painful memories, Julie’s experience has only strengthened her bond with her family, especially with daughter Savannah, who fiercely advocated for her parents’ release and raised awareness about the inhumane conditions they endured.
While the couple’s legal battles and prison experiences have captivated the public for years, their recent release marks a new chapter—one filled with healing, reflection, and, perhaps, redemption.
Stay tuned for more updates from the Chrisley family as they share their post-prison journey and continue rebuilding their lives under the public spotlight.
