Moonshiners: Heartbreaking Tragedy of Mark Ramsey | 2025 Update
Mark Ramsey’s Moonshine Legacy and Unwavering Support for Digger Manes Amid Health Battle
Mark Ramsey, one of the most respected figures in the world of moonshining, has long carried the torch passed down from his legendary mentor, Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton. As a star of Discovery’s hit reality series Moonshiners, Mark has captivated audiences with his deep-rooted distilling knowledge, quick wit, and undeniable passion for preserving Appalachian tradition.
But recently, Mark and his longtime partner Digger Manes have faced a challenge more personal—and far more daunting—than evading the law: Digger’s battle with leukemia.
Rooted in Tradition: Mark’s Early Life and Moonshine Journey
Born on March 5, 1970, in East Tennessee, Mark Ramsey grew up immersed in Appalachian culture. He learned early how to hunt, fish, and live off the land. But it was meeting Popcorn Sutton that truly set the course of his life. Under Popcorn’s guidance, Mark mastered the art of traditional moonshine—from building a still to blending the perfect batch.
His skill and respect for heritage would eventually lead him to a lifelong partnership with friend and fellow distiller Digger Manes.
Television Stardom and Legal Success
Mark and Digger joined Moonshiners in Season 3 (2013), quickly becoming fan favorites. Their easy camaraderie, humor, and dedication to traditional methods set them apart from others on the show who often clashed with law enforcement.
In 2015, the duo partnered with Sugarlands Distilling Company to bring legal moonshine to market. Their offerings, such as Mark & Digger’s Hazelnut Rum and Digger M’s Rye Apple Shine, became hits. They also appeared on Master Distiller, a spin-off series where they shared their expertise and competed with other top distillers.
Personal Life and Business Partner in Love
Mark Ramsey is married to Sally Jane Clark, his longtime partner in life and business. The couple celebrates their anniversary every April 19, though their wedding date remains private. While they have no known children, Sally is an integral part of the moonshine operation. She even has her own signature drink—Sally Jane’s Apple Pie Shine—and frequently promotes their work at events and online.
Digger’s Leukemia Diagnosis: A Heartbreaking Turn
In the Season 13 premiere of Moonshiners, fans were hit with an emotional moment when Digger revealed to Mark that he had been diagnosed with chronic lymphatic leukemia (CLL). Digger admitted he wasn’t sure how much time he had left, sparking concern across the Moonshiners community.
Shortly after the episode aired, Digger clarified on Facebook that while his condition is serious, it is not terminal. “Ain’t no fun though,” he wrote, adding with typical humor, “It’ll probably just make me miserable until something else kills me.”
Through it all, Mark has remained a steadfast presence, offering support and companionship as Digger undergoes treatment.
Resilience and the Road Ahead
Despite the health scare, both Mark and Digger are determined to keep the stills running and the spirits high—literally and figuratively. Their bond, forged over decades, remains unshakable. Together, they continue to experiment with new flavors while honoring the heritage of their craft.
Fans have rallied behind the duo, flooding social media with messages of support. As Mark and Digger push forward, their legacy—and their moonshine—continue to shine.
