Emergency Response After Major New Year’s Day Crash Close to Jeremy Clarkson’s Pub.

Four people were taken to hospital after a serious road traffic collision occurred just yards from Jeremy Clarkson’s Cotswolds pub, The Farmer’s Dog, casting a sombre shadow over New Year’s Day celebrations in the area.

The crash took place at approximately 4.40pm on January 1 at the busy junction where the A40 meets the B4047, near Burford in Oxfordshire. The location is close to Clarkson’s recently opened pub, which has quickly become a popular destination following the success of Clarkson’s Farm.

Emergency Services Rush to the Scene

According to Thames Valley Police, two vehicles were involved in the collision, and all four occupants sustained serious injuries requiring hospital treatment. Emergency services responded swiftly, with police, fire crews, and paramedics working together to manage the incident.

Firefighters from Witney and Burford stations were joined by a specialist rescue unit from Kidlington. Although those involved had already exited their vehicles by the time crews arrived, firefighters assisted paramedics in administering urgent medical care at the scene.

The road was immediately closed in both directions while emergency teams worked, causing significant disruption for motorists travelling through the area on one of the busiest days of the holiday period.

Road Closures and Public Warnings

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service issued warnings to drivers as traffic quickly backed up along surrounding routes. In a statement, a spokesperson said the A40 had been closed “outside The Farmer’s Dog pub near Burford and the roundabout with the B4047,” urging motorists to seek alternative routes.

Initial police reports indicated that a 23-year-old man had suffered serious injuries. However, officers later confirmed that all four individuals involved in the crash were seriously hurt and remain under medical care.

At this stage, no arrests have been made, and police have confirmed that investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing.

Appeal for Witnesses

Officers are now appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who was travelling through the area around the time of the crash or who may have dashcam footage that could assist investigators. The incident caused widespread delays on New Year’s Day, with traffic disruption continuing well into the evening.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision.

A Popular Venue Near the Spotlight

The incident occurred close to The Farmer’s Dog, which opened in 2024 and forms part of Clarkson’s growing rural business ventures alongside Diddly Squat Farm and Hawkstone lager. The pub has drawn large crowds since opening, benefiting from its connection to the Amazon Prime series Clarkson’s Farm.

Clarkson has previously spoken about his commitment to supporting British agriculture, with several of the pub’s drinks made entirely from UK-sourced ingredients. He has also suggested that demand from his Hawkstone brewery could significantly boost the British hops industry.

Despite the commercial success, Clarkson has indicated he has no plans to expand further, choosing instead to focus on maintaining what he has already built.

A Quiet End to a Festive Day

What began as a festive New Year’s Day ended with emergency sirens and road closures near one of Oxfordshire’s most talked-about venues. While the incident was not connected to the pub itself, its proximity to such a high-profile location has drawn public attention.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, while thoughts remain with those injured and their families as they recover from a serious start to the new year.
