Gold Rush: White Water: Dustin Hurt Suffers Heartbreaking Injury.

NUGGET CREEK, ALASKA — The new season of Gold Rush: White Water opened with a brutal twist of fate as veteran crew leader Dustin Hurt suffered a serious injury that threatened to derail the team’s entire mining season.

In the premiere episode of Season 8, Hurt badly injured his hand while working on the pulley system for the team’s custom-built deuce sluice dredge. The injury was severe enough to force him on a 30-mile journey from the team’s remote Nugget Creek claim to Haines, Alaska, for medical treatment. His absence halted operations and cast a shadow of uncertainty over the team’s gold prospects.

Back at camp, foreman Carlos Minor stepped in to keep the mission alive. The crew focused on stabilizing their 250-pound dredge, which teetered dangerously close to being swept into the raging creek below. Their skyline anchors—perched 550 feet above—were no longer holding. A backup system was urgently needed to avoid disaster.

Meanwhile, Dustin received grim news in Haines. Doctors confirmed he had a broken finger and a torn tendon pulley. Surgery was the safest option—but would also end his season. For Hurt, the decision was clear.

“I’ll give up a finger for that,” he declared, opting to stay on light duty and steer operations from the sidelines, even if it meant staying out of the water.

Back at Nugget Creek, the crew executed Dustin’s high-risk plan: tensioning the skyline to break loose unstable rock and re-anchor the dredge to safer ground. It worked—but barely.

With the dredge secured, divers Carlos Minor and Paul dove in. But just two hours later, a clogged filter basket created dangerous backpressure in the hot water line. Steam built up, nearly scalding the divers—until a last-minute valve release saved them. Disaster was narrowly avoided again when one of the intake valves snapped off, leaving the team with only one functioning line.

Despite the setbacks, diver James Ham refused to quit. Fighting brutal currents, he followed a bedrock wall and dredged deeper—and struck pay dirt. Just as the day closed, Ham surfaced with a small but promising gold nugget.
