Jeremy Clarkson’s Pub: An Honest Review of “The Farmer’s Dog” – Is It Worth the Hype?

Jeremy Clarkson’s much-talked-about pub, The Farmer’s Dog, located in the picturesque Oxfordshire countryside, has garnered a significant amount of attention since it was featured in Clarkson’s Farm. As with any celebrity venture, it’s hard not to wonder: is the hype really justified? Having read about the long lines of eager fans and heard the glowing reviews, I decided to visit the pub myself to see if it truly lives up to its reputation. Here’s my honest take after spending a night there.

The Booking Struggle

One of the first things I noticed, and frankly, one of my biggest disappointments, was the difficulty in booking a table. Unlike the usual local pubs where you can walk in and grab a pint, The Farmer’s Dog requires you to book a table weeks in advance. In fact, securing a reservation was almost as difficult as scoring tickets to a major concert. I managed to get a booking for 8:45 pm on a Tuesday – the latest available time. While I understand the popularity of Clarkson’s venture, the need to book at least a month in advance felt a bit over the top for a pub.

Upon arrival, we were 20 minutes early, but the staff was strict about timings. We were ushered to the bar to wait until our reserved time. I couldn’t help but feel like I was at a restaurant rather than a cozy countryside pub. While waiting, I did appreciate the outdoor decking area, complete with large heaters and a bar. It gave a nice ambiance as we waited for our dinner slot.

Crowded and Fast-Paced

When the clock struck 8:45 pm, we joined a line of others who had booked the same time. The seating area was cramped, with little room between tables. It became clear that the pub had maximized its capacity to accommodate as many fans as possible, but it sacrificed comfort in the process.

The service was fast—too fast, in fact. Within minutes of sitting down, we were greeted by a well-trained staff member who took our orders. To my surprise, our food arrived in less than 15 minutes. While the food was undeniably delicious and featured local produce, the quick service made the experience feel rushed. We barely had time to enjoy the meal before we were wrapping things up in under an hour.

For a place with such a reputation, I expected a slower, more relaxed pace typical of a traditional English pub, but instead, it felt like dining at an upscale restaurant.

Lacking the Warmth of a True Pub

As someone who grew up with the warm, cozy atmosphere of a true pub, another glaring issue was the lack of pub warmth—both figuratively and literally. There were no dartboards on the wall, no pool tables to gather around with friends, and no televisions for watching football, a crucial component of any true pub. Without those familiar elements, the atmosphere felt sterile and less like a community space, which I personally missed.

Moreover, there was no crackling fire or comfy seating to unwind after a long country walk. Sure, it looked chic and modern, but I felt the place lacked that welcoming, homely vibe you crave in a pub.

More Than Just a Pub: A Tourist Attraction

Despite these setbacks, it’s clear that The Farmer’s Dog is more than just a place to grab a drink. The sprawling site includes a butcher, a burger shack, a bread stall, an ice cream shop, and a second Diddly Squat Farm shop. It’s easy to spend a couple of hours exploring the various stalls and shopping for local goodies, and the views of the Oxfordshire countryside are simply stunning.

With Diddly Squat Farm just 20 minutes away, the experience feels more like a day out at a tourist attraction than a casual visit to a local pub. If you’re a fan of Clarkson’s farm adventures, the chance to shop for his farm products or grab a bite at his pub will undoubtedly add to the charm.

Final Thoughts: A Mixed Experience

Overall, my visit to The Farmer’s Dog was a mix of enjoyment and disappointment. While the food was fantastic, the overbooking system and rushed service took away from what could have been a more relaxed and authentic pub experience. The atmosphere, though beautifully decorated and modern, didn’t quite live up to the warmth of the classic British pub, and the lack of leisure activities was noticeable.

For those visiting to get a taste of the Clarkson experience, The Farmer’s Dog will undoubtedly offer a fun and unique outing. But if you’re expecting a cozy, walk-in spot to watch football with friends, you may be left wanting more. For a celebrity-run venture, the pub undoubtedly attracts a lot of attention—but whether it lives up to the legacy of British pubs is another story.
