A Scar From Jeremy Clarkson… and the Truth Behind What Happened Next
Jeremy Clarkson’s Infamous Punch, a Broken Finger, and the Unexpected Pub Truce with Piers Morgan
For two of Britain’s most outspoken media giants, Jeremy Clarkson and Piers Morgan, their long-running feud has become almost as legendary as their careers. But behind the headlines, the insults, and the infamous punch heard round the media world lies a story far stranger—and far more human—than many fans realize.
The explosive moment happened nearly two decades ago, yet the drama surrounding it continues to resurface. Now, with Piers Morgan’s revealing new book Woke Is Dead reigniting the controversy, fresh details are emerging about the night Clarkson punched him square in the head… and what the Top Gear icon did next that no one expected.
The Punch That Left a Scar—and a Broken Finger
According to Morgan, the feud escalated in 2004 after he ran photos in the Daily Mirror that Clarkson begged him not to publish—images showing Clarkson with a woman who was not his wife. Morgan went ahead anyway.
“When we next crossed paths,” Morgan writes, “he punched me before we settled things at the British Press Awards.”
Morgan still carries a small scar on his forehead from the blow—and admits he doesn’t entirely blame Clarkson.
“It wasn’t unjustified,” he says. “Though I did think he had a very weak punch… and he broke his finger on my head, which I found quite satisfying.”
Jeremy Clarkson, never one to shy away from telling his side, once wrote in The Times that the confrontation was far from one-sided:
“He thundered, ‘Why’s your f****** wife looking at me like that?’ So I punched him. And then I punched him again. And then I thought: ‘You know what? I don’t think this would ever get boring.’ So I punched him again. And, annoyingly, broke my finger.”
Their brawl instantly became tabloid legend.
Then Came the Twist No One Saw Coming
Years passed before either man attempted to repair the damage. Yet one day, out of nowhere, Morgan says his phone lit up.
“Clarkson here. Drink?”
Just like that, the television titan invited Morgan to his local pub.
The meeting, improbably, went well. The pair drank, talked, laughed, and—according to Morgan—came to a fragile but genuine truce.
“We got his daughter and one of my sons to act as peace treaty ratifiers,” Morgan recalls. “We’re never going to be best buddies, but we now tolerate each other’s existence without wanting to punch each other. That’s progress.”
For two men famous for their fiery tempers, that might indeed be a breakthrough.
Clarkson Now: Older, Sorer, and Fighting the Farming Life
While the punch may be 20 years old, Clarkson continues to find himself in the headlines—this time for a very different struggle.
The former Top Gear host has repeatedly opened up about the physical toll of life on Diddly Squat Farm, the real-life setting of Clarkson’s Farm, his hit Amazon Prime series.
“I’m old and broken,” he confesses.
Farming, he says, may look peaceful, but behind the scenes it’s physically punishing. Although humorously, Clarkson claims it’s a job “ideal for those who don’t like to work up a sweat,” insisting only mattress testers have it easier.
Still, even his most rugged machinery isn’t making life simpler. His beloved Supacat—a hulking, six-wheel, military-grade vehicle originally designed to rescue broken Land Rovers from battlefields—has its own challenges.
“It can operate anywhere,” Clarkson says. “But getting in and out of it when you’re old and broken? That’s another story.”
A Feud for the Ages—And a Fragile Peace
The Clarkson-Morgan saga is a reminder that behind the bravado, both men are capable of surprising humility. A punch became a scar. A scar became a story. And a story—one involving a broken finger, bruised egos, and a pub pint—became an unlikely truce.
Even if they’ll never be best friends, both men now admit the feud has softened. And for fans, that may be the most unexpected plot twist of all.
