Moonshiner Josh Owens Update: Health, Family & Future Plans Revealed.

Josh Owens: From Motocross Star to Moonshiner Icon – The Turbulent Journey of a Fan Favorite

From racing tracks to distilling spirits, Josh Owens’ rise to fame on Moonshiners has been nothing short of dramatic. But behind the charisma lies a life marked by tragedy, resilience, and controversy.

From Two Wheels to Moonshine

Born in August 1977 in Columbus, North Carolina, Josh Owens first made his name as a professional motocross racer. But it was his entry into Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners in 2012 that turned him into a small-screen sensation. Unlike many cast members who were born into the trade, Josh didn’t begin learning the art of moonshine distilling until his early 30s, under the mentorship of the late Barney Barnwell.

Before passing, Barney asked Josh to keep the legacy alive by building an underground still. Josh fulfilled that promise—and soon after, was invited to join Moonshiners, officially cementing his place in the world of Appalachian distilling.

Personal Life: Family, Heartbreak, and Hustle

Josh is a devoted father and regularly shares heartwarming photos of his daughter on social media. Though he was once in a long-term relationship with the mother of his child, the two parted ways amicably. Later, he dated Amber Lynn Gabrick, but the relationship ended, though they still co-parent their beloved pet dog.

Off-screen, Josh owns “Tree and Yardbusters,” a company dedicated to garden and yard maintenance. His passion for quad bikes and motorcycles remains strong—although it hasn’t always served him well.

Close Calls and Controversy

Josh’s moonshining career has not been without danger or drama. While filming the show, he burned down both his house and trailer in separate accidents during distilling attempts. In March 2018, disaster struck again when a tire blew on his vintage Harley-Davidson, causing a violent crash.

The accident left him with a torn rotator cuff, punctured lung, broken collarbone, and more. Worse yet, Josh didn’t have health insurance at the time. He later claimed he was sent home without proper care due to his financial situation—claims the hospital denied. Even so, he sold merchandise to cover his medical bills and continued to battle chronic pain and mobility issues.

Recent Accident at Daytona Sparks Concern

Josh made headlines again recently after being involved in a serious incident at the Daytona International Speedway. Conflicting reports emerged, with some calling it a “deadly crash” while others insisted he was hospitalized in stable condition.

A Facebook page managed by a friend of Josh later confirmed that he is recovering, and prayers poured in from fans and followers.

What Happened to Josh on 'Moonshiners?'

The Legacy of Moonshiners

Produced by Magilla Entertainment for the Discovery Channel, Moonshiners premiered in 2011 and showcases the lives of distillers across Appalachia. Inspired by legendary bootlegger Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton, the series blends drama, history, and tradition. Although criticized for being scripted, producers maintain the show’s authenticity.

Meet the Moonshiners Cast

  • Tim Smith: The face of the series, Tim turned a family recipe into a booming legal distillery.

  • Stephen Ray Tickle: The show’s most scandalous figure, with a long rap sheet and near-death experiences.

  • Mark Ramsey & Eric “Digger” Manes: Fan favorites known for their close bond, humor, and distilling expertise.

  • Jim Tom Hedrick: A retired legend passing on his wisdom after decades in the trade.

  • Jeff & Lance Waldrop: The father-son duo left the show in 2019. Tragically, Lance passed away in 2021 from congenital heart failure at just 30 years old.

Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton: The Man Behind the Movement

The spirit of Moonshiners is deeply rooted in the legacy of Marvin Sutton. Born in 1946 and raised in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, Marvin was a lifelong distiller who chose to end his life rather than serve an 18-month federal sentence. His story inspired countless moonshiners and helped shape the cultural phenomenon the show is today.

A Story of Grit and Legacy

Josh Owens’ journey—from motocross racer to TV moonshiner, through fires, crashes, and heartbreak—captures the spirit of resilience. Whether or not he returns to the dating scene or keeps his focus on family and craft, one thing is clear: Josh remains one of Moonshiners’ most compelling and enduring figures.
