Chaos at Clarkson’s Farm? Locals Push Back as Fame Changes the Village
The Rise of Diddly Squat Farm Hasn’t Been Smooth for Everyone in Oxfordshire
Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm may be a hit with global audiences, but closer to home, its growing fame is causing friction. While Clarkson’s Farm has put the quiet countryside of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire on the map, not all locals are thrilled about the changes the show has brought.
A Celebrity Farm with Unintended Consequences
Clarkson, known for Top Gear and The Grand Tour, purchased the 1,000-acre plot in 2008. His journey from motoring icon to struggling farmer has become a massive streaming success, with Clarkson’s Farm now four seasons deep on Prime Video and a fifth in development.
However, the show’s popularity has had ripple effects in the area—most recently sparking resistance to a housing development plan by Rainier Developments to build 350 new homes.
Locals Voice Their Frustration
Some long-time residents feel that the fame surrounding Clarkson is changing the village atmosphere. Bricklayer Scott Sumners, speaking to The Daily Mail, shared a negative encounter involving the presenter at a local petrol station:
“A man went up to him and said, ‘Hello Jeremy,’ but he just replied, ‘That’s Mr Clarkson to you.’ I didn’t like that. There’s no need to be rude.”
Others, like Bianca, a former Londoner who relocated to Chipping Norton because of her love for Clarkson’s Farm, now regret the move.
“I moved here because of Jeremy, but I’m probably going back to London. There’s literally nothing here. I probably didn’t do enough research.”
Divided Opinions: Warm Encounters from Fans
Despite the backlash, Clarkson continues to enjoy support from many fans—especially those who have met him in person.
On the Clarkson’s Farm subreddit, one Redditor recounted a filming day on the farm during Season 4:
“Met Jeremy, Lisa, and Gerald… They’re all lovely. Jeremy was sat in his chair having tea and happily chatted. We even talked about scenes from the movie Airplane. He asked questions, listened, and even repeated some of what I said to others later on.”
Another added:
“I only talked with them for a few minutes, but they were lovely. Jeremy is charismatic and easy to like. I can see why he’s been so successful.”
The Reality of Rural Fame
While Jeremy Clarkson’s farm may represent a dream for viewers, the local reality is more complex. Some residents see the farm as a disruption to their peaceful community, while others embrace the attention and tourism it brings.
As Clarkson’s Farm gears up for future seasons, it’s clear the story unfolding in Chipping Norton isn’t just about crops and cattle—it’s about the clash between celebrity and countryside, and the very real impact of rural fame.
